Our AimThe Green Law Department focuses on mental health and the environment.
Environmental Law is an overarching framework which explores and tries to improve upon environmental issues through principles of sustainability and conservation. Within this framework, the aim of our department is to spread awareness of environmental issues and enhance hands-on participation for a deeper understanding. In respect to the mental health aspect of the department, we focus on student’s mental health and how to deal with university. This year, we are hoping to do this through talks from various mental health organisations as well as with collaborations from other societies and past alumni. |
What We DoIn 2014, we set up links with City and Hackney MIND, a charity which focuses on mental health, our members have been involved in various programmes that they run and we hope this will continue to grow. We have also worked with the Holy Cross centre for a few years and continue to do so.
The environment is all around us, and so are the issues that come along with it. The relationship between the environment, resources and society is one of the biggest challenges we are facing in the twenty-first century. We are also always looking to expand our connections with local charities and aim to set up new links on a regular basis. Currently we are working with three very different charities. Our members regularly volunteer at the Whitechapel Mission, a local charity which aims to feed and clothe the homeless. In addition to this, the Green Law Department is in charge of the Pro Bono Society’s Annual Book Sale from which half of the proceeds goes to a selected charity. |
A project from FIELD internsThe film across was produced by Queen Mary Law Students together with The Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development (FIELD) as part of a QMPBS-exclusive internship concerning the the ongoing UN negotiations about a possible new international oceans agreement, which would be crucial for the protection of marine biodiversity and for devising rules concerning the extraction of deep sea resources.
“The Green Law Department was a wonderful experience and exposure for me. I met people who were passionate about the same subject matters as I was, and, I gained practical experience through my involvement in a research project concerning the threats to and developments in marine environments.”
